Mundaring Water Treatment Plant

The MHHS has always advocated the protection of places of historic significance to the Shire. For this reason we are deeply dismayed by the choice of the site currently occupied by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC)’s Divisional Headquarters for a treatment plant for water destined for the Kalgoorlie pipeline.

The site is located in the village settlement area near Mundaring Weir, the storage dam for the goldfields water supply, and is not the site recommended by the community after extensive community consultation. While MHHS recognises a plant is needed to treat water that supplies WA’s eastern goldfields and wheatbelt, the chosen site will mean the loss of a significant part of Mundaring’s heritage.

If you would like to express your objection to the use of the site as a water treatment plant we would like to hear from you. Please contact us on 9298 8944. More information here »

Interpretation Strategy

Update on the preparation of an Interpretation Strategy for the Shire of Mundaring.

In late 2008, the Mundaring and Hills Historical Society was successful in achieving a Lotterywest grant to have an Interpretation Strategy prepared to advance cultural and natural heritage interpretation in the Shire of Mundaring. The concept is to utilise the Mundaring District Museum in conjunction with Mundaring Visitor Centre as the hub from which locals and visitors can engage with the shire’s rich and diverse heritage.

Dr Brian Shepherd is the consultant working on the project and has already met with some of the key stakeholders. Brian will meet with the executive of the MHHS on 11 February. He will then prepare a brief discussion paper for distribution prior to a public meeting. Issues to be addressed include:

  • Developing the main themes for the museum to address
  • Strategies for telling the stories of each definable hills community
  • Ways visitors may explore sites and how they can be understood

A draft Interpretation Strategy will then be prepared and distributed for comment prior to a second public meeting.
