WWII Nominal Roll »
This Australian War Memorial database contains information from the service
records of over one million men and women who served
in Australia's defence forces during WWII.
Memorial Avenue in Chidlow (see
map »), was originally a vacant
block of land used as a popular shortcut between Willcox
Street & Thomas Street. Whippet (dog) races were
also held
there by Mr. F. T. Jones, who owned, then later
donated the land for the Avenue. He also owned the
adjacent block, where he built the original General
Store & Bakery in the 1890's.
On Arbor Day 1949, a tree planting ceremony,
sponsored by the Chidlow Progress Association, was
held to commemorate local men who served in the wars.
School pupils, along with Mr L. Thorn MLA, each
planted a tree in the newly named and dedicated
'Memorial Avenue'.
